The federal government could consider the possibility of a similar scheme as a feasible way to fight the current high costs of gasoline and other commodities.
Certain states have tried in reducing their gas rates and have considered offering cash back to citizens. Some states, like New York, are considering stopping the gas tax entirely or offering a small rebate. The governor has also offered tax reductions for renters, as well as homeowners who are paying gas taxes at or above that of the minimum federal rate. Governor Andrew Cuomo has even proposed cutting the gas tax by half once the average price of non-leaded fuel reaches $4.51 for a gallon during summer.
