The federal government hasn’t adopted the Gas Rebate Act that will take effect in 2022. However, they are considering a plan, and some cities and states have already approved legislation for it. Inflation rebates are meant as a way to help consumers cope price increases. Though they are not federal programs most of the rebates offered are issued by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government needs to think about this scheme for a practical way to fight the current high costs of fuel and other commodities.
Certain states have attempted to reduce their gas prices as well as are considering discounts to its residents. Some states, like New York, are considering abstaining from the gas tax altogether or offering a small rebate. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax relief for renters and homeowners who are paying gas taxes at or above that of the minimum federal rate. The governor has even suggested reducing the gas tax by half once the average price for fuel without leaded hits $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also backed suspending the state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

These include a three-month gasoline tax break. At the time of writing it is unclear what is being contemplated by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin for every state. While President Trump has suggested an all-national gas tax holiday but has not come across any legislation that could fund it.
