The federal government must consider such a plan for a practical way to counter the rising costs of gasoline and other items.
Certain states have tried to lower their gas taxes and are now considering offering the residents of those states with refunds. Governor Bloomberg has also proposed tax reductions for renters and homeowners who pay for gas at or above an amount that is higher than the federal minimum. He even proposed reducing the gas tax by half when the average price of non-leaded fuel reaches $4.51 per gallon during summer. Some of the political leaders in New York state have also proposed suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.
They’re not available in all states
While the federal government isn’t looking to roll out any kind of stimulus package in the state legislature, lawmakers from the state and President Biden are putting forward various plans to help consumers. The proposals include a three-month discount on gasoline taxes. As of late June there was nothing concrete being considered by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates begin for every state. While President Trump has proposed nationwide gas tax holidays but he is unable to find an appropriate legislation to pay for it.
They’re controversial
No matter the politics behind the idea, gas rebate cards are an important tool to help Americans combat the high cost of gas. But, they’ve been criticized by some. A couple of months ago House Democratic counsel rejected this plan, saying it would lead to inflation, cost too much, and was not well targeted. In the past, more senior White House aides raised concerns regarding the rebate cards because there was a shortage of microchips.
