While it is not a federal program, many of these rebates have been issued by state governments in surplus. The federal government needs to think about such a plan as a viable option in order to lower the prices for gasoline and other goods.
Certain states have tried to reduce their gas tax as well as are considering reimbursements for residents. Some states, like New York, are considering eliminating the gas tax entirely or offering a modest rebate. Governor Cuomo also has proposed tax reductions to renters and homeowners who have gas taxes at or above that of the minimum federal rate. He’s even proposed to cut the gas tax by 50 percent when the average price for unleaded fuel is $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some of the political leaders in New York state have also suggested suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

While the federal government is not intending to implement any type of stimulus plan however, state legislators and the President Biden have come up with various ideas to help consumers. These proposals include a three-month fuel tax exemption. At the time of writing it is unclear what is being looked at by Congress. It could be a while before gas rebates start to be offered in all states. Although the President has been able to propose an annual gas tax holiday across the country but has not come across any law that would allow him to fund it.

It doesn’t matter what the politics of the idea, gas rebate cards are an important tool to help Americans overcome the price of gas. But they’ve also been criticized by some. Two months ago, House Democratic counsel rejected the program, claiming that it would increase inflation, was costly, and wasn’t well-targeted enough. The plan was first announced by more senior White House aides raised concerns about the rebate cards because there was a shortage of microchips.
