The federal government has not passed the Gas Rebate Act for 2022 yet, but it is considering such an option. In addition, some cities and states have already promulgated legislation for it. Checks for inflation rebates are designed to help people cope with rising prices. While they aren’t a federal program, many of these rebates are issued through state governments who have surplus funds. The federal government could consider such a program as an effective means to counter the rising costs of fuel and other goods.
Certain states have tried at reducing their gas taxes as well as are considering discounts to its residents. Certain states, such as New York, are considering abolishing the gas tax completely or offering small rebates. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax cuts for renters and homeowners that pay gas tax at or above what the Federal minimum. He even proposed reducing the gas tax by half when the average price of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 per gallon in summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also agreed to suspend the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

Although the federal government is not planning to launch any kind of stimulus plan state legislators and President Biden are putting forward various plans to help consumers. These include a 3 month gas tax holiday. However, as of late June the proposal is not being debated by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates start to be offered in all states. While the President has proposed that a national tax holiday on gas however, he’s yet to find any legal way to fund it.

However, regardless of the political implications of the idea gas rebate cards are one of the many tools to help Americans combat the high cost of gasoline. But, they’ve already run into some resistance. A few months ago, House Democratic counsel was critical of the scheme, concluding it would create inflation, was expensive, and wasn’t properly targeted. The plan was first announced by Senior White House aides raised concerns regarding the rebate cards as a result that there were no microchips.
