The federal government hasn’t yet passed the Gas Rebate Law of 2022 just yet, but it is currently considering plans. Some states and cities have already put in place legislation for it. Inflation rebate checks are designed to aid citizens with the rising cost of living. Although not a program of the federal government, many of these rebates can be issued through state governments with surpluses. The federal government should think about this as an effective way to address the current high costs of gasoline and other products.
Certain states have tried to cut their gas taxes and are now considering offering cash back to citizens. Some states, like New York, are considering cutting the gas taxes completely or offering a small refund. Governor Cuomo also has proposed taxes for renters as well as homeowners who are paying gas taxes at or above what the Federal minimum. The governor has even suggested reducing the gas tax by half when the price of unleaded fuel hits $4.51 per gallon during summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also agreed to suspend the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.

Although the federal government has not attempting to implement any kind of stimulus plan state lawmakers and President Biden have put forward a variety of ideas that will help consumers. These proposals include a three month vacation on the gas tax. As of late June it is unclear what is being considered by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates start rolling out across all states. While the President has proposed nationwide gas tax holidays, he has not found an acceptable legislation to finance the holiday.
