While they aren’t a federal program most such rebates are given by state governments that have surplus funds. The federal government needs to think about this scheme as an effective method in order to lower the price of gasoline and other products.
A few states have tried to lower their gas taxes and are looking into offering the residents of those states with refunds. Some states, like New York, are considering taking the gas tax off completely or offering a small rebate. The governor has also proposed tax cuts for renters or homeowners who pay gas tax over those at the national minimum. He’s even proposed cutting the tax on gas by 50% when the average cost for unleaded fuel is $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also advocated for the removal of the state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
These aren’t available in all states
While the federal government isn’t attempting to implement any kind of stimulus package as of yet, state lawmakers and president Biden have presented a variety proposals to assist consumers. This includes a three-month time-frame for the holiday of gas taxes. At the time of writing no concrete plan is currently being examined by Congress.
