However one White House official says the Biden administration isn’t going to push for such a program, since it is difficult to manage and would require Congressional approval. A gas-reward card could be a great temporary solution, but there are several issues that need to be identified before it’s the norm for American consumers.

The federal government hasn’t adopted the Gas Rebate Act of 2022 as of yet, however it is currently considering plans, and certain cities and states have enacted legislation for it. These rebates are intended be used to assist consumers in coping with the increase in costs. Though they are not federal programs, many of the rebates offered are issued by states’ governments using surplus funds. The federal government must consider the possibility of a similar scheme as an effective method to tackle the high prices for gasoline and other goods.
Some states have tried to cut their gas taxes and are looking into offering credits to the citizens of their states. Certain states, such as New York, are considering eliminating the gas tax entirely or offering a small discount. The governor has also proposed tax breaks for renters as well as homeowners who pay gas prices at or above their federally minimum. Governor Brown has also proposed reducing the gas tax by 50 percent when the average price of non-leaded fuel reaches $4.51 per gallon during summer. Two months ago House Democratic counsel had a negative view of the scheme, concluding it would create inflation, was prohibitively costly, it wasn’t targeted sufficiently. Earlier, more senior White House aides raised concerns over the rebate card due of the lack of microchips.
