The federal government must consider such a scheme as an effective means to fight the current high price of gasoline and other goods.
Some states have tried in reducing their gas rates and are also considering refunds to residents. Certain states, such as New York, are considering cutting the gas taxes completely or offering a small amount of rebate. Governor Bloomberg has also proposed tax reductions to renters and homeowners who pay their gas taxes in excess of levels that are higher than federal minimum rates. Governor Andrew Cuomo has even proposed cutting the tax on gas by half when the cost of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 per gallon during summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also suggested suspending the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
