The federal government has not implemented the Gas Rebate Act that will take effect in 2022. However, it is currently considering plan and some states and cities have already approved legislation for it. Inflation rebates are meant to help people cope with the rising cost of living. While they’re not a federal government program most of these rebates are issued through state governments who have surplus funds. The federal government must consider this as a viable option to reduce the current high cost of gasoline as well as other items.
A few states have tried at reducing their gas taxes and are looking into offering the residents of those states with refunds. Certain states, such as New York, are considering abstaining from the gas tax altogether or offering a small amount of rebate. The governor has also suggested tax reductions for renters, as well as homeowners who have gas taxes at or above that of the minimum federal rate. He’s even proposed cutting the gas tax by half once the average price of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 per gallon during summer. Certain politicians in New York state have also support the idea of suspending state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.

While President Trump has proposed to extend a national gas tax holiday and has not yet found the right legislation to support the holiday.
