The federal government hasn’t signed the Gas Rebate legislation for 2022 yet, but it is currently considering plans, and certain cities and states have already implemented legislation in this regard. These rebates are intended be used to assist consumers in coping to rising costs. While not a federal program the majority of these rebates can be issued by state governments from surpluses. The federal government should take into consideration the possibility of a similar scheme as a viable option to counter the rising cost of gasoline as well as other commodities.
Some states have tried to reduce their gas prices and are now considering offering reimbursements for residents. Certain states, such as New York, are considering abolishing the gas tax completely or offering a modest rebate. Some politicians in New York state have also backed suspending the state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
