A gas rebate card could make a good interim solution however, there are many challenges that need to worked out before it becomes a reality for American consumers.
Gas Rebate Stimulus from Federal Government
The federal government hasn’t taken up the Gas Rebate Bill of 2022 yet, but it is currently considering the idea and some cities and states have put in place legislation for it. Checks for inflation rebates are designed to assist people in dealing with rising prices. Though they are not federal programs the majority of these rebates have been issued through state governments who have surplus funds. The federal government should think about such a scheme for a practical way to fight the current high price of gasoline and other goods.
Certain states have attempted to reduce their gas prices and are looking into offering cash back to citizens. Certain states, such as New York, are considering stopping the gas tax entirely or offering small rebates. The governor also proposed tax relief for renters and homeowners who pay for gas at or above thresholds of federal minimum. The governor has even suggested reducing the gas tax by 50% when the average cost of fuel that is not leaded reaches $4.51 per gallon in summer. A few political figures in New York state have also support the idea of suspending state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
They aren’t available in all states
Although the federal government is not in the process of implementing any type of stimulus plan as of yet, state lawmakers and president Biden have come up with various ideas to help consumers. These proposals include a three-month gasoline tax break. At the time of writing no concrete plan is currently being looked at by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin rolling out across all states. While President Trump has even proposed the national gas tax holiday, he has not found any viable legislation to fund it.
They’re controversial
The issue is not the politics of the concept gas rebate cards are one of many ways to help Americans combat the high cost of fuel. But, they’ve faced some resistance. Two months ago House Democratic counsel panned the plan, stating it could cause inflation, was prohibitively costly, and wasn’t targeted well enough. Before, higher-up White House aides raised concerns concerning the rebate cards because they were unable to find microchips.
