Gas Money Rebate – The idea of gasoline rebate cards has been on the table in Washington for a while and is a possibility to provide households with financial aid, particularly since gasoline prices topped $5/gallon this week. However it is said that a White House official says the Biden administration won’t advocate for such a plan, since it is difficult to implement and requires Congressional approval. An incentive card for gas may be a feasible solution in the short term but there are plenty of issues that have to be resolved before it becomes an actual reality for American customers.
Gas Money Rebate from Federal Government
The federal government hasn’t passed the Gas Rebate Act of 2022 yet, but it is looking at an option, and a few states and cities have already put in place legislation for it. Inflation rebate checks aim to aid citizens with the rising cost of living. While they aren’t a federal program most of the rebates offered are issued by states’ governments using surplus funds. The federal government should take into consideration the possibility of a similar scheme as an effective method to combat the current high cost of gasoline as well as other items.
Certain states have tried to lower their gas taxes and are considering offering rebates or refunds to their residents. Some states, including New York, are considering abstaining from the gas tax altogether or offering a small refund. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax reductions to renters and homeowners who pay for gas in excess of the federal minimum rate. The governor has even suggested reducing the tax on gas by 50% when the average cost for unleaded fuel is $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some of the political leaders in New York state have also proposed suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.
They aren’t available in all states.
While the federal government is not intending to implement any type of stimulus package in the state legislature, lawmakers from the state and President Biden have offered a range of suggestions that will help consumers. These proposals include a three month gas tax holiday. But as of late June the proposal is not being contemplated by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates begin with all states. While President Trump has even proposed to extend a national gas tax holiday, he has not found an acceptable legislation to finance the holiday.
They’re controversial
No matter the politics behind the concept, gas rebate cards are one of many ways to help Americans overcome the price of gasoline. However, they’ve come up against some resistance. A couple of months ago House Democratic counsel expressed displeasure with the plan, stating it would increase inflation, was costly, and wasn’t targeted well enough. In the past, higher-up White House aides raised concerns regarding the rebate cards as a result it was not enough microchips.
