Gas.rebate – The idea of gas rebate cards has been debated in Washington for a while with the potential of providing consumers with financial assistance, especially after the prices of gasoline hit $5 per gallon in the last week. However one White House official says the Biden administration will not push to introduce such a scheme, as it would be difficult to implement and requires Congressional approval. An incentive card for gas may be a feasible solution in the short term however there are a number of issues to be worked out before it becomes real for American consumers.
Gas.rebate from Federal Government
The federal government hasn’t yet passed the Gas Rebate Law for 2022 yet, but it is looking at an idea, and some cities and states have already enacted legislation for it. Checks for inflation rebates are designed for helping people deal with rising prices. Although they are not a federally-funded program the majority of these rebates can be issued by states’ governments using surplus funds. The federal government should take into consideration such a program as a viable option to tackle the high costs of gasoline and other commodities.
Certain states have tried to reduce their gas tax and are currently considering offering rebates or refunds to their residents. Certain states, such as New York, are considering abstaining from the gas tax altogether or offering a small discount. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax breaks for renters as well as homeowners who pay their gas taxes over the federal minimum rate. He’s even proposed to cut the gas tax by 50% when the average cost of unleaded oil reaches $4.51 per gallon during the summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also supported the suspension of the state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.
They are not available in every state.
While the federal government has not trying to put together any type of stimulus package State lawmakers and President Biden have put forward a variety of ideas that will help consumers. These proposals include a three month period of a gas tax vacation. At the time of writing no concrete plan is currently being discussed by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin for all states. While President Obama has offered a national gas tax holiday however, he hasn’t found an appropriate legislation to pay for the holiday.
They’re controversial
It doesn’t matter what the politics of the concept it is one of the many tools to assist Americans to manage the cost of gas. But, they’ve met with some resistance. A few months ago, House Democratic counsel panned the scheme, stating that the plan would cause inflation, was too costly, and wasn’t properly targeted. In the past, senior White House aides raised concerns about the rebate card because of the dearth of microchips.
