A few states have tried to lower their gas taxes and are considering offering the residents of those states with refunds. Some states, including New York, are considering abolishing the gas tax completely or offering a small discount. Governor Bloomberg has also proposed tax breaks for renters as well as homeowners who pay gas taxes over thresholds of federal minimum. He’s even proposed cutting the tax on gas by half when the price of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 per gallon during summer. Some of the political leaders in New York state have also supported the suspension of the state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.
