Gas Standing Charge Rebate from Federal Government
The federal government hasn’t adopted the Gas Rebate Act of 2022 yet, but it is looking into such plan and some cities and states have already implemented legislation in this regard. Inflation rebates are meant to help people cope increased costs. While it is not a federal program, many of these rebates are issued by state governments in surplus. The federal government could consider such a scheme for a practical way to tackle the high prices of gas and other commodities.
A few states have tried to cut their gas costs and are now considering offering rebates or refunds to their residents. Some states, including New York, are considering taking the gas tax off completely or offering a small amount of rebate. The governor has also suggested tax cuts for renters and homeowners who pay gas tax in excess of thresholds of federal minimum. He has even proposed reducing the tax on gas by half once the average price for fuel without leaded hits $4.51 per gallon in summer. Certain political leaders from New York state have also advocated for the removal of the state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.
