The federal government has not approved the Gas Rebate Act in 2022, however it is looking at the idea and some cities and states have put in place legislation for it. The purpose of these rebates is for helping people deal with the increase in costs. Though they are not federal programs most of these rebates were issued through state governments who have surplus funds. The federal government should consider this type of scheme as a viable option in order to lower the costs of gasoline and other products.
A few states have tried to cut their gas costs and are also considering refunds to residents. Some states, like New York, are considering suspending the gas tax altogether or offering a tiny rebate. The governor also proposed taxes for renters as well as homeowners who pay for gas at or above those at the national minimum. The governor has even suggested reducing the tax on gas by 50 percent when the average price for unleaded fuel is $4.51 per gallon during the summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also proposed suspending the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.

While the federal government isn’t in the process of implementing any type of stimulus package as of yet, state lawmakers and president Biden have come up with various ideas that will help consumers. These include a 3 month gas tax holiday. In the final days of June there is nothing concrete being contemplated by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin to be distributed across all states. Although President Obama has suggested nationwide gas tax holidays however, he’s not been able to come up with any law that would allow him to fund the holiday.

Whatever the political nature of the idea gas rebate cards are one of many ways to assist Americans combat the high cost of fuel. But, they’ve already been criticized by some.
