The federal government has not implemented the Gas Rebate Act from 2022. However, they are considering an idea, and some cities and states have promulgated legislation for it. Inflation rebates are meant be used to assist consumers in coping with rising prices. While it is not a federal program the majority such rebates are given by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government could consider this scheme as an effective means for tackling the current high prices for gasoline and other products.
A few states have tried in reducing their gas rates and are currently considering offering credits to the citizens of their states. Some states, including New York, are considering abstaining from the gas tax altogether or offering a rebate. The governor has also suggested tax relief for renters and homeowners who pay gas taxes in excess of what the Federal minimum. He has even proposed reducing the gas tax by 50 percent when the average price for unleaded fuel is $4.51 per gallon during summer. A few political figures in New York state have also proposed suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

While the federal government isn’t planning to launch any kind of stimulus plan State lawmakers and President Biden have presented a variety proposals to assist consumers. These include a 3 month vacation on the gas tax. However, as of the end of June there is nothing concrete being discussed by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates start to roll out in all states. The President has made a proposal for the national gas tax holiday but has not come across any viable legislation to fund it.
