Some states, including New York, are considering cutting the gas taxes completely or offering small rebates. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax cuts for renters or homeowners who are paying gas taxes at or above thresholds of federal minimum. He’s even proposed cutting the tax on gas by half once the average price of unleaded gas reaches $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some politicians in New York state have also backed suspending the state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

While the federal government isn’t intending to implement any type of stimulus plan as of yet, state lawmakers and president Biden has proposed a variety of solutions for consumers. The proposals include a three-month gas tax holiday. However, as of late June no concrete plan is currently being considered by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates start being distributed to all states. While President Trump has suggested a national gas tax holiday however, he’s not been able to come up with any viable legislation to fund it.
They’re controversial
