The Gas Rebate Act – The idea of gas reward cards has been discussed in Washington for some time and may provide households with financial relief, especially considering the fact that gas prices increased to $5 a gallon last week. However an White House official says the Biden administration will not be advocating against a similar scheme since it’s a challenge to administer and require Congressional approval. The gas rebate card might be a feasible solution in the short term but there are plenty of issues to be dealt with before it can be a reality for American consumers.
The Gas Rebate Act from Federal Government
The federal government hasn’t come up with the Gas Rebate act for 2022 yet, but it is considering such a plan, and some states and cities have already promulgated legislation for it. Inflation rebate checks are designed be used to assist consumers in coping with the increasing cost of living. While not a federal program the majority of these rebates can be issued by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government should consider the possibility of a similar scheme as an effective means to address the current high prices of fuel and other products.
Certain states have attempted to lower their gas taxes and are looking into offering credits to the citizens of their states. Some states, like New York, are considering dropping the gas tax completely or offering a small amount of rebate. The governor has also offered tax breaks for renters as well as homeowners who are paying gas taxes over their federally minimum. He’s even proposed to cut the gas tax by half once the average price of unleaded fuel hits $4.51 a gallon in the summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also suggested suspending the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
These aren’t available in all states
While the federal government is not intending to implement any type of stimulus package, state lawmakers and President Biden have proposed various proposals for consumers. These proposals include a three month gas tax holiday. But as of late June, nothing concrete is being debated by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates start with every state. While the President has proposed an annual gas tax holiday across the country however, he hasn’t found any feasible legislation to fund it.
They’re controversial
No matter the politics behind the idea regardless of the political stance, gas rebates are one of many instruments to help Americans get through the cost of gas. But they’ve also faced some resistance. A few months ago, House Democratic counsel panned the plan, stating it could cause inflation, was prohibitively costly, and wasn’t targeted well enough. In the past, Senior White House aides raised concerns about the rebate cards due to of the shortage of microchips.
