The federal government should think about such a scheme as an effective way to address the current high costs of fuel and other items.
Certain states have tried at reducing their gas taxes and are considering offering reimbursements for residents. Some states, including New York, are considering taking the gas tax off completely or offering a small amount of rebate. Governor Bloomberg has also proposed tax reductions for renters and homeowners who have gas taxes in excess of the federal minimum rate. He’s even proposed cutting the gas tax by 50% when the average cost for fuel without leaded hits $4.51 per gallon in summer. A few political figures in New York state have also backed suspending the state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.

While the federal government isn’t intending to implement any type of stimulus plan state lawmakers and President Biden have proposed various proposals to help consumers. These include a 3-month relaxation of the tax on gas. But as of late June no concrete plan is currently being discussed by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates start being distributed to every state. While President Trump has suggested an all-national gas tax holiday but has not come across the right legislation to support the holiday.
