While they’re not a federal government program the majority of these rebates have been issued by state governments that have surplus funds. The federal government must consider the possibility of a similar scheme as a method to combat the current high costs of gasoline and other products.
Certain states have attempted at reducing their gas taxes and are considering offering credits to the citizens of their states. Some states, including New York, are considering stopping the gas tax entirely or offering a modest rebate. The governor also proposed taxes for renters as well as homeowners who have gas taxes in excess of those at the national minimum. He’s even proposed cutting the gas tax by 50% when the average cost of non-leaded fuel reaches $4.51 per gallon in summer. Some political leaders in New York state have also been in favor of suspending the state’s gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
