The federal government hasn’t adopted the Gas Rebate Act that will take effect in 2022. However, it is currently considering an idea, and some cities and states have already put in place legislation for it. Inflation rebates are meant be used to assist consumers in coping with the increasing cost of living. While not a federal programme, many of these rebates have been issued by state governments from surpluses. The federal government should think about such a program as an effective way for tackling the current high prices of gas and other goods.
Some states have tried to reduce their gas tax and are also considering discounts to its residents. The governor has also suggested tax reductions to renters and homeowners who have gas taxes in excess of what the Federal minimum. Although the federal government is not seeking to create any sort of stimulus plan, state lawmakers and President Biden have come up with various ideas to help consumers. The proposals include a three-month discount on gasoline taxes. However, as of late June it is unclear what is being thought of by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates start to be distributed across every state. While the President has proposed an annual gas tax holiday across the country but has not come across the right legislation to support the holiday.
