Southwest Gas Energy Efficiency Rebate Program – The idea of gas rebate cards has been on the table in Washington for some time and it has the potential to provide individuals with financial relief particularly considering that gasoline prices reached $5 per gallon on the week. However an White House official says the Biden administration will not advocate for a similar program since it’s difficult to manage and would require Congressional approval. Gas rebate cards could be a great temporary solution however there are a number of problems to be identified before it’s a reality for American consumers.

The federal government hasn’t implemented the Gas Rebate Act of 2022 yet, but it is looking into such a plan, and some cities and states have approved legislation for it. These rebates are intended to help citizens cope with the rising cost of living. While it is not a federal program most of these rebates can be issued by state governments based on surpluses. The federal government could consider the possibility of a similar scheme as a feasible way to reduce the current high prices of gas and other goods.
Certain states have tried to cut their gas costs and are currently considering offering tax refunds for their citizens. Some states, including New York, are considering dropping the gas tax completely or offering a rebate. Governor Andrew Cuomo has also suggested tax reductions for renters and homeowners who pay their gas taxes at or above the federal minimum rate. He’s even proposed to cut the gas tax by fifty percent when the median price of unleaded fuel hits $4.51 per gallon during summer. A few political figures in New York state have also supported the suspension of the state gas tax, which is 33.3 cents per gallon.
These aren’t available in all states.
While the federal government has not trying to put together any type of stimulus plan State lawmakers and President Biden has proposed a variety of solutions to help consumers. These include a three-month gasoline tax break. However, as of late June it is unclear what is being debated by Congress. It could be a while before gas rebates start rolling out across all states. While President Trump has proposed a national gas tax holiday, he has not found the right legislation to support it.

Just two months ago House Democratic counsel expressed displeasure with the proposal, concluding that it would lead to inflation, was too expensive, and wasn’t well-targeted enough.
