The federal government hasn’t yet passed the Gas Rebate Law for 2022 yet, but they are considering the idea and some cities and states have promulgated legislation for it. Checks for inflation rebates are designed as a way to help consumers cope to rising costs. While they aren’t a federal program the majority of the rebates offered are issued through state governments with surpluses. Federal government officials should look into such a scheme as an effective method to counter the rising costs of fuel and other goods.
Some states have tried to reduce their gas tax and are currently considering offering tax refunds for their citizens. Certain states, such as New York, are considering eliminating the gas tax entirely or offering a modest rebate. Governor Bloomberg has also proposed tax cuts for renters or homeowners who pay gas tax over thresholds of federal minimum. The governor has even suggested reducing the gas tax by 50% when the average cost of unleaded oil reaches $4.51 per gallon during summer. Some politicians in New York state have also proposed suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

Although the federal government has not planning to launch any kind of stimulus package State lawmakers and President Biden are putting forward various plans for consumers. They include a 3-month gasoline tax break. However, as of late June no concrete plan is currently being debated by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates start to be offered in all states. While President Trump has even proposed an all-national gas tax holiday however, he’s not been able to come up with the right legislation to support it.

No matter the politics behind the idea regardless of the political stance, gas rebates are among the many options to help Americans weather the cost of fuel. However, they have already come up against some resistance. In the last two months, House Democratic counsel had a negative view of the proposal, concluding that it would lead to inflation, was too costly, as well as not being targeted properly enough.
