However the White House official says the Biden administration will not call for a program like this, because it would be difficult to manage and would require Congressional approval. An incentive card for gas may seem like a viable solution for a short-term fix but there are plenty of difficulties that need identified before it’s real for American consumers.

The federal government hasn’t taken up the Gas Rebate Bill that will take effect in 2022. However, they are considering plan and some states and cities have already adopted legislation in support of it. These rebates are intended to assist citizens in coping to rising costs. Although not a program of the federal government most of these rebates are provided by state governments from surpluses. The federal government should take into consideration this type of scheme as an effective means in order to lower the prices of gasoline and other items.
Certain states have tried to reduce their gas tax and are considering offering credits to the citizens of their states. Some states, like New York, are considering suspending the gas tax altogether or offering small rebates. Governor Bloomberg has also proposed tax breaks for renters as well as homeowners who pay their gas taxes in excess of what the Federal minimum. He’s even proposed cutting the tax on gas by half when the average price for unleaded fuel is $4.51 per gallon during the summer. Some of the political leaders in New York state have also support the idea of suspending state gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.

Although the federal government is not trying to put together any type of stimulus plan states’ lawmakers and President Biden have proposed various proposals to aid consumers. These proposals include a three-month period of a gas tax vacation. At the time of writing no concrete plan is currently being discussed by Congress. It will be some time before gas rebates begin for every state. While President Trump has even proposed an annual gas tax holiday across the country but he is unable to find an acceptable legislation to finance the holiday.
They’re controversial
The issue is not the politics of the idea, gas rebate cards are an important tool to help Americans get through the cost of gas. But, they’ve run into some resistance. Two months ago, House Democratic counsel rejected the scheme, stating that it could cause inflation, was expensive, and didn’t target enough. In the past, senior White House aides raised concerns about the rebate cards due to insufficient microchips.
