The federal government hasn’t come up with the Gas Rebate act of 2022 just yet, but it is looking into such plan and some cities and states have already implemented legislation in this regard. Inflation rebates are intended as a way to help consumers cope increased costs. Though they are not federal programs most of these rebates have been issued to state governments through surpluses. The federal government needs to think about this type of scheme as an effective way to counter the rising prices of gasoline and other goods.
Some states have tried to lower their gas taxes and are also considering the residents of those states with refunds. Some states, like New York, are considering abolishing the gas tax completely or offering a small discount. The governor has also offered tax cuts for renters or homeowners who pay gas prices at or above what the Federal minimum. Governor Andrew Cuomo has even proposed cutting the gas tax by 50 percent when the average price of non-leaded fuel reaches $4.51 per gallon in summer. Some politicians in New York state have also been in favor of suspending the state’s gas tax of 33.3 cents per gallon.
They aren’t available in all states
Although the federal government has not endeavoring to introduce any kind of stimulus package states’ lawmakers and President Biden are putting forward various plans for consumers. These include a 3 month discount on gasoline taxes. However, as of the end of June, there’s nothing concrete to be contemplated by Congress. It will take a few months before gas rebates begin to be offered in every state. Although President Obama has suggested the idea of a national holiday for gas taxes, he has not found any legislation that could fund it.
They are controversial
